Overview

Presbyterian Homes & Services is seeking a Chief of Staff for its team.

 

The Chief of Staff (CoS) is a key advisor and strategist to the CEO, responsible for managing the Presbyterian Homes & Services executive office's operations and driving organizational effectiveness. This role ensures the CEO’s focus remains on strategic priorities by coordinating cross-functional activities, managing communications, and aligning leadership efforts. Acting as a trusted partner, the Chief of Staff facilitates decision-making, oversees special projects, and enhances collaboration across departments and stakeholders.

 

REPORTING STRUCTURE

The Chief of Staff works in the President’s Office, reports to the CEO, and oversees the work of the staff of the President’s Office. This individual will work closely with all members of the President's office to support the work of the organization, execution of strategic priorities, lead short- and long-term strategic planning processes.

Responsibilities

Rooted in the organization’s biblically based mission of honoring God by enriching the lives and touching the hearts of older adults, the Chief of Staff plays a critical role in fostering seamless communication, advancing strategic initiatives, and upholding Christian values. This leader provides operational and leadership excellence to advance the organization’s purpose and impact.


This position manages executive-level priorities and facilitates collaboration between the CEO, board members, key stakeholders, senior leadership, staff, and partners to advance PHS’s purpose of honoring God by enriching the lives and touching the hearts of older adults.

 

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

 

Strategic Leadership and CEO Support

• Serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO, driving strategic priorities, decision-making, and alignment across the organization.
• Oversee workflow and prioritize initiatives to maximize the CEO's strategic focus and effectiveness, acting as gatekeeper for non-priority items.
• Engage with functional teams on CEO’s behalf in CEO’s absence, act with delegated authority when noted.

   

Operational Excellence in the President’s Office

• Lead a team of 3–8 individuals, ensuring professional support for the CEO, including administrative, logistics, strategic priorities management, management systems work, and governance process requirements are achieved.
• Serve as “air traffic controller” for the executives workflows, prioritizing tasks, and allocating resources effectively.
• Anticipate needs and challenges, ensuring CEO and executive team is well informed and prepared.

   

Governance and Board Administration

• Accountable for Board of Directors meeting operations, including agenda planning in partnership with CEO, materials preparation, archiving, and affiliate board alignment with VP of Affiliate Boards to maximize governance effectiveness.
• Consult on board member recruitment, committee structures, and joint meeting agendas to drive strategic outcomes.

   

Strategic Planning and Systems Management

• Administer the strategic planning process, ensuring alignment with PHS’s mission, vision, and values.
• Oversee the work of the Management Council (Management Systems team) for the effective cadence, flow, and balance of senior leadership meetings and organizational systems to ensure alignment of priorities from the CEO down to site leadership in support of the One PHS Plan and organizational strategy.
• Oversee the work of the VP Administration and special projects team to ensure that organizational priorities are achieved in a timely and efficient manner.
• Collaborate with the executive team to ensure alignment of initiatives and goals throughout PHS to achieve strategies.
• Represent all voices (Ministry, Customer, Employee, and Business) in strategy development and execution.

   

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Accountability

• Facilitate executive collaboration to achieve cross-functional outcomes in alignment with strategic goals.
• Manages the organizational pipeline of strategic initiatives (One PHS Plan, 2x2 priorities, etc.), ensuring accountability, clarity, ownership, and timely execution.

   

Metrics, Reporting, and Management Systems

• Oversee timely, clear, and efficient production and maintenance of KRA metrics, strategic updates, and management support systems to ensure operational effectiveness.
• Oversee adoption, simplification, effectiveness and continuous improvement of systems that measure and enhance performance outcomes.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in business administration, healthcare management, or a related field preferred.
  • 8–10 years of progressive people and project leadership experience, preferably in senior living, healthcare, or nonprofit sectors.
  • Proven track record in managing complex projects, facilitating strategic initiatives, and driving organizational effectiveness.
  • Strategic thinking and critical decision-making
  • Demonstrated ability to see the big picture while managing the details.
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to work with cross-functional teams, and diverse individuals, fostering a culture of compassion, collaboration, and shared mission.
  • High standards in communication, and relationship-building, demonstrating integrity and respect for all stakeholders. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong ability to analyze data, manage competing priorities, and resolve complex issues.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, able to evaluate complex data with a focus on maximizing mission-driven impact.
  • Organizational expertise, a deep understanding of the business and its goals.
  • Discretion and trustworthiness; handles sensitive information with integrity and professionalism.
  • Faith-based alignment with PHS’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Understanding of the unique needs of senior living environments, with a commitment to the faith-based values-based decision-making that aligns with PHS’s mission and vision.

  • Ability to travel nationally as required to ensure success of projects. (PHS currently has interests in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Washington, and travels for potential partner engagement opportunities and conferences nationally.)

Pay Range

The estimated starting pay range for this role is $200,000-$245,000 per year. This good faith estimate is based upon PHS’s typical starting pay range for this role. Actual pay range depends on many factors including each individual employee’s qualifications and market conditions and is subject to change.

Full-time benefits-eligible employment begins at a minimum of 30 hours per week:
